310S vs. 253MA stainless steel: high temperature resistant

What is 310S stainless steel?
310S stainless steel is a high-alloy, low-carbon version of 310-grade austenitic stainless steel. Due to its high chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) content, it possesses excellent oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, and superior high-temperature creep strength, with a maximum continuous operating temperature of up to 1150°C. It can withstand repeated heating and is one of the most widely used heat-resistant steels in industrial applications. It performs exceptionally well in highly oxidizing environments, is not prone to rusting or deformation, and possesses the toughness and ductility characteristic of austenitic stainless steel, making it easy to perform cold and hot working and welding.

What is  253MA stainless steel?
253MA (UNS S30815) is a high-strength, heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel known for its exceptional oxidation resistance at extreme temperatures (up to 1150°C / 2100°F). By balancing nitrogen, silicon, and rare earth elements (like cerium), it delivers superior creep strength and durability compared to traditional heat-resistant alloys like Grade 310.

What is the difference between 253MA and 310S stainless steel?
253MA and 310S are both austenitic heat-resistant stainless steels, but 253MA is a micro-alloyed, lean-alloy grade designed for superior mechanical strength and cyclic oxidation resistance. 310S is a heavily alloyed steel intended for continuous, high-temperature resistance and resistance to carburization.

Max Temperature Up to 1150°C (2000°F) Up to 1150°C (2000°F)
Creep Strength Excellent (more than twice as strong as 310S above 870°C/1600°F) Lower than 253MA at extreme temperatures

What is the temperature limit for 310S stainless steel?
The temperature limits of 310S stainless steel depend on the working environment, but for most applications, it can withstand continuous operating temperatures up to 1050°C and intermittent exposure temperatures up to 1100°C. The high-temperature limits of 310S vary depending on atmospheric conditions: continuous oxidizing environment: up to 1050°C; intermittent operation: up to 1100°C; low-oxygen environment: up to 1000°C; sulfur-containing environment: up to 950°C.

What is the temperature rating of 253MA?
253MA (UNS S30815) is a high-temperature austenitic stainless steel. Its optimal operating temperature range is 850°C to 1100°C (1560°F to 2010°F), and it remains resistant to oxidation even at temperatures up to 1150°C (2100°F) in air.
Key Temperature Thresholds:
Maximum Operating Temperature (Air): 1150°C (2100°F);
Optimal Operating Temperature Range: 850°C – 1100°C (1560°F – 2010°F);
High-Temperature Structural Application Temperature: 500°C – 900°C

Which stainless steel is best for high temperature?
For extreme high temperatures (up to 1150°C / 2100°F), grade 310 stainless steel is the best standard stainless steel. It has a high chromium and nickel content, thus exhibiting excellent resistance to oxidation, scaling, and high-temperature creep.
