ASTM A240 316 2B Stainless Steel Plate

316 stainless steel plates undergo bright annealing to form a dense passive film. Cold rolling minimizes surface defects. Combined with the molybdenum content, this enhances rust resistance by over 30% compared to No.1 surface in environments like seawater and mildly acidic media-ideal for coastal areas and swimming pool applications.

The 316 2B surface finish steel sheet features low surface roughness (Ra ≤ 0.8μm), a matte appearance without visible grain lines, and excellent resistance to dirt and bacterial growth, making it well-suited for hygienic applications such as food processing and medical environments.

In addition, 316 2B steel sheets offer high flatness (tolerance ±0.02mm), a yield strength approximately 20% higher than No.1 finish, and excellent resistance to scratching and cracking during stamping. Weld discoloration is minimal, and surface adhesion for secondary treatments is improved-making it ideal for various fabrication processes.

Q. What is the thickness range of ASTM A240 316 2B plates?
A.Standard thicknesses range from 0.5 mm to 50 mm or more, depending on the manufacturer. Custom thicknesses can also be supplied upon request.

Q. What are the standard plate sizes available?
A.The most common size is 4’ x 8’ (1219 mm x 2438 mm), but other sizes such as 5’ x 10’ or custom-cut dimensions are also available to meet specific project needs.

Q. Is 316 2B stainless steel plate suitable for welding?
A.Yes. 316 stainless steel has excellent weldability. It can be welded using all standard fusion methods, with or without filler metals. Post-weld annealing is recommended in some corrosive environments.

Q. How does 316 stainless steel compare to 304?
A.While both are austenitic stainless steels, 316 contains molybdenum, which gives it superior resistance to chloride-induced corrosion, making it a better choice for marine or harsh chemical conditions. 316 also has slightly higher strength and heat resistance.
