410 VS 420 Stainless Steel Bar: The Key Difference?

The main differences between 410 stainless steel bar and 420 stainless steel bar are as follows:

I. Chemical composition

1. 410 stainless steel:

- Carbon (C) content is generally around 0.15%.

- Chromium (Cr) content is between 11.5% - 13.5%.

- Other elements such as manganese (Mn), silicon (Si), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S) and other contents are also specified accordingly.

2. 420 stainless steel:

- The carbon content is relatively high, usually in the range of 0.16% - 0.25%.

- The chromium content is also high, about 12.0% - 14.0%.

- It also contains a certain amount of molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V) and other elements to improve its performance.

II. Performance characteristics

1. Hardness:

- 410 stainless steel bar: The hardness is relatively low. After heat treatment, the hardness can reach about HRC40 - 45.

- 420 stainless steel bar: It has a higher hardness and can reach HRC50 - 55 after heat treatment. It is suitable for occasions that require higher hardness.

2. Corrosion resistance:

- Both have a certain degree of corrosion resistance, but the corrosion resistance of 410 stainless steel is slightly inferior to that of 420 stainless steel.

- 410 stainless steel performs better in dry environments, but is prone to corrosion in humid or corrosive environments.

- Due to its high chromium content and other alloying elements, 420 stainless steel has relatively good corrosion resistance, especially in some weakly corrosive environments.

3. Strength:

- The strength of 420 stainless steel bars is generally higher than that of 410 stainless steel bars.

- This makes 420 stainless steel more suitable for mechanical parts and structural parts that bear larger loads.

III. Uses

1. 410 stainless steel bars:

- Commonly used in general mechanical structural parts, bolts, nuts, valves, etc., where hardness and corrosion resistance are not too high.

- It can also be used for some decorative parts, such as railings, handrails, etc.

2. 420 stainless steel rod:

- It is mainly used to manufacture knives, surgical instruments, bearings and other parts that require high hardness and corrosion resistance.
