Which Is Harder AISI 303 Or 304 Stainless Steel Plate?

1. Different chemical composition
The chemical composition of 303 stainless steel is different from that of 304. In the overall chemical composition, the sulfur content is greater than 0.15, and it also contains molybdenum. Compared with 304 stainless steel, the addition of sulfur and molybdenum strengthens the steel's performance in cutting and high-temperature adhesion resistance. At the same time, 303 stainless steel has a high manganese content to improve its toughness and strength.

2. Different scope of use
The scope of use of 303 and 304 stainless steel is also different. 303 is suitable for automatic lathe cutting and hardware parts with high surface finish, such as bolts, nuts, sleeves, etc.
304 stainless steel is suitable for general mechanical structural parts, building structural parts, food industry equipment and other fields.
In general, 303 steel is usually used for parts and components of mechanical equipment and places with high manufacturing demand, while 304's strong corrosion resistance can be used in various fields.

3. Different performance
The performance of 303 and 304 stainless steel is also different. 303 has higher strength, hardness and toughness than 304, and has better corrosion resistance. However, its rust spots are easily affected by mechanical cutting or processing, and small pits will appear, which are difficult to remove. In contrast, 304 stainless steel has better corrosion resistance and can better cope with various corrosion problems.

Machinability Better machinability due to added sulfur content Good machinability, but not as good as 303
Corrosion Resistance Good, but slightly less than 304 due to sulfur addition Excellent corrosion resistance

303 is suitable for the manufacturing of various spare parts. Its chemical composition and performance are particularly suitable for automatic lathe cutting and products with surface finish requirements.
304 stainless steel is suitable for general mechanical structural parts, building structural parts, food industry equipment and other fields that require strong corrosion resistance.
