X12Cr13 /410/1.4006 stainless steel

This guide answers common buyer questions about X12Cr13 / 1.4006 / 410 stainless steel, including its chemical composition, equivalent grades, heat treatment behavior, and typical applications.

What Is X12Cr13 / 1.4006 / 410 Stainless Steel?

This steel belongs to the martensitic family, which means it can be hardened by heat treatment-unlike austenitic types like 304 or 316.

Designation Standard Description
X12Cr13 EN 10088-1 Steel with 12% Cr, martensitic structure
1.4006 EN Werkstoffnummer for X12Cr13

1.4006 / 410 stainless steel Heat Treatment

X12Cr13 / 1.4006 is air or oil hardenable, and its properties depend heavily on heat treatment:
Annealing: 800–850°C followed by slow cooling (soft structure)
Hardening: 980–1050°C followed by rapid cooling (martensitic structure)
Tempering: 200–600°C to reduce brittleness and adjust hardness

⚠️ Temper at temperatures above 400°C to avoid temper embrittlement.

What is the equivalent treatment for 1.4006/410 Stainless Steel?

Standard Equivalent Grade
ASTM/SAE AISI 410, UNS S41000
EN X12Cr13, 1.4006
JIS SUS410
GB 1Cr13
ISO X12Cr13

What Is The Difference Between SUS410 And 304 Stainless Steel?

SUS410 (martensitic Cr13 series, carbon ≤0.15%, nickel-free) can be hardened and strengthened, with high strength (tensile strength ≥440MPa) but weak corrosion resistance, and is suitable for tool bearings.
304 (austenitic 18Cr-8Ni, carbon ≤0.08%) has excellent corrosion resistance and plasticity (elongation ≥40%) due to its nickel content, non-magnetic and no need for heat treatment after welding, and is mostly used in food equipment and decoration.
