What Is 1.4539 Stainless Steel?

1.4539 stainless steel, also known as 904L, is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel containing high levels of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and copper, designed for excellent corrosion resistance in aggressive environments such as strong acids, seawater, and chloride-rich conditions.

1.4539 stainless steel (904L) vs. 1.4404 stainless steel (316L)

1.4539 stainless steel (904L) and 1.4404 stainless steel (316L) are both austenitic stainless steels, but their alloy content and corrosion resistance vary greatly.
904L contains higher nickel (23–28%) and has added copper (1–2%), which enhances its resistance to strong reducing acids such as sulfuric acid and improves its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments. In contrast, 316L has a lower nickel content (10–14%) and no copper, which makes it suitable for general corrosion resistance but less effective in highly aggressive chemicals or seawater conditions.
As a result, 904L is often used in chemical processing, marine equipment, and pharmaceutical industries, where excellent corrosion resistance is critical, while 316L is more commonly used in food-grade, construction, and general industrial environments.

1.4539 stainless steel (904L) is your go-to material when standard stainless grades fail in aggressive environments. Its global equivalents like UNS N08904 or SUS890L prove its international recognition.
